The All-Pioneer District volleyball team was recently announced and Craig County had five girls named to the team, including first and second team selections.
Senior Taylor Sloss was named to the first team and sophomore Haleigh Smith was a second team selection. Honorable mention went to sophomore Jaci McAlwee and two freshmen, Nicole Austin and Autumn Hutchison.
Sloss led the Rockets with 288 assists and also topped Craig with 30 blocks. Her serving percentage was an outstanding 96.1 percent and she also contributed 100 kills, which was second on the team.
Smith tied for the team lead in service aces with 51 while serving 92.1 percent. She had 95 kills for the season.
McAlwee led the Rockets, by far, with 149 kills for the season. She had 30 aces and 12 blocks.
Austin had 51 aces to tie for tops on the team and was fourth with 88 kills. She had 15 blocks, which was third best for the Rockets.
Hutchison had 74 kills, 26 blocks and 20 aces.
The Rockets recently finished their season with a 5-19 record. Fellow Pioneer District member Narrows was still alive in the state tournament as of Monday. The Green Wave was scheduled to play Rye Cove in a state quarterfinal game Monday, and the winner was to meet Chilhowie on Tuesday in a state semifinal match. The other semifinal had Altavista against Mathews, and the Class 1 championship is Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University at 11 am.
