Craig Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently celebrated their tenth anniversary with a reception at the Old Brick Hotel in New Castle. Attended by members, guests and three prospective members, the event featured red, white and blue balloons, cake with DAR emblems and some of the seven scrapbooks that relate the chapter’s accomplishments.
The chapter currently has 21 members; eleven of those were charter members and eligible for a 10-year certificate.
The chapter was formed in 2007 with the encouragement of Betty Byrd Huffman St. Clair, a Craig County native and DAR member in Tazewell. She worked with Helen Looney of Craig County Historical Society to recruit the required number of twelve members. The organizing regent was Nancy Feild, who at that time had been a DAR member for 38 years.
Chapter activities have included Constitution Week displays, Good Citizen awards, the Veterans Honor Dinner and GM Boxtop collections. The group planted a pink dogwood at the New Castle Town Hall and in 2016 placed a bronze plaque in the Craig County courthouse in honor of local Vietnam veterans.
