McHarg Elementary School’s Book Buddies program won a grant from Herma’s Readers, Frank Beamer’s organization to promote literacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The group is named in honor of Beamer’s mother, who was a teacher.
McHarg’s Book Buddies program is funded by Radford City Schools as a tutoring program for first graders. They train student interns from Radford University to work one on one with first graders.
Because the school won the grant (more than $1700), The former Virginia Tech Football coach came to read to the students.
He read to a group of 45 students and the 17 interns in McHarg’s “Tinker Tank,” but all students at McHarg were able to experience his visit through a green screen live broadcast.
