Glenvar comes in at 2-1 after splitting two matches against quality opponents in the past week. The Highlanders beat Northside at home in five sets last Thursday, then lost to Blacksburg on the road Monday.
The Northside match went down to the wire. Glenvar lost the first set, 25-20, but rallied to win the next two, 25-21 and 25-8. The Highlanders had the Vikings on their heels, but Northside bounced back to win the fourth set, 25-17, and tie the match. Glenvar then pulled it out by winning the fifth set, 15-11.
“We played real well,” said Glenvar coach Basil Conner. “I was pleased with our effort.”
Kiera Omberg led Glenvar with 16 kills and Hannah Green had 14. Allison Clark had 28 assists and Sydney McMahon had five kills with no errors.
On Monday the Highlanders ran into a buzz saw in Blacksburg, falling 25-22, 25-17 and 25-16. The Bruins return a good portion of last year’s team that was state runnerup in Group 3A.
“I knew they were quick but I didn’t expect them to be that tall,” said Conner. “They had four girls who were six foot or taller. I thought we played decent, but Blacksburg has a very, very good team.”
McMahon had eight aces to lead the Highlanders and Omberg had four. Green led the team with six kills.
Next Tuesday, September 5, Glenvar will return the trip to Northside.
