In observance of Senior Citizens Day, which is August 21, the Catawba Valley Farmers Market (CVFM) will have special activities on Thursday, August 24.
These include blood pressure checks, demonstration on exercises, as well as information on nutrition, physical activities, hospice care and home health services. There will also be giveaways.
The Farmers Market will have free pinto beans and corn bread for shoppers, and Tonya Pickett with the Extension Service-SNAP Ed will have samples of Skillet Cabbage.
All of the special Senior Citizens Day activities, including the food, will be held inside the Community Center, in air-conditioned comfort.
Market vendors will have their usual assortment of meats (including frozen non-GMO chickens), vegetables, fruits, fried pies, baked goods, herbs, and hand-made arts and crafts.
CVFM accepts SNAP/EBT cards and matches the amount charged to the cards. On Senior Citizens Day, anyone using their SNAP/EBT card will also be given an extra $10.00 to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables.
A special feature of the day will be music from the Simple Gifts of the Blue Ridge, a group from Blacksburg. They will be back with a hammered dulcimer, guitars, flute, bass and percussion instruments, playing more of their folk, celtic, gospel and old-time songs.
The Catawba Valley Farmers Market is held each Thursday from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Catawba Community Center, 4965 Catawba Creek Road (Rt. 779), in Catawba. This is a Roanoke County park site, with covered shelter, playground and restrooms. The site is handicap accessible. For updates on CVFM, visit their Facebook page.
