On May 2, Craig County Retired Teachers met for their annual Scholarship Meeting. They began with a delectable potluck luncheon in the Craig Valley Baptist Church fellowship hall following a blessing led by Panco Cantley, the president.
After a brief business meeting discussing the scholarship and donations the selection committee was assigned to choose the scholarship winner.
Then Joe Ann Duncan, the Vice President, led a devotion and introduced the program. The retired teachers heard excepts from the Writing Project funded by donations collected in March. Students were encouraged to write an essay entitled “Why I Love Craig County.” If they participated they were given a chance for cash prizes. Jay Polan, who coordinated the project, read excerpts from the essays to a delighted audience.
Not surprisingly the themes almost universally expressed how beautiful and peaceful the scenery is and how close and helpful the community is. The winners drawn from about thirty entries were: Logan Kitler, Jaela Hutton, Hunter Ashley, Maria Dressler, and Autumn Hutchison. The group was very impressed with the students’ efforts and hoped the essays would help the students with their SOL tests.
The meeting was adjourned. Dues will be collected and autumn projects will be discussed during the back to school meeting at the high school in August.
