Maggie Walker is looking to win a fourth straight Cup in Group 2A with 290 points thus far. Glenvar is in 18th place after scoring 35 points in the winter, all in girls’ swimming. The Highlanders now have 57.5 points overall.
Jamestown leads Group 4A with 210 points, just seven and a half more than Great Bridge. Salem is 26th with 57.5 after scoring 50 with a state football championship in the fall. Salem scored 7.5 points in the winter in girls’ indoor track.
Blacksburg, of the River Ridge District, is the only leader from the fall season still holding the top spot in their Group standings, topping Group 3A. The Bruins continued their season-long dominance with an impressive winter, scoring 160 total points with 50 in boys’ track, 40 in both girls’ track and girls’ swimming and 30 in boys’ swimming. The Bruins have 405 total points to lead second place Tabb by 112.5 points.
Oakton is aiming for a third Cup in five years in Group 6A. Group 1A leader George Wythe and 5A leader Princess Anne are hoping to hoist the cup for the first time after spring sports conclude the competition.
First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports – the state champions’ state champion.
Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the League’s enrollment groups. The winner of the Wells Fargo Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports.
