The Craig County Board of Supervisors covered a wide-ranging agenda during its April 2 meeting, including budget work sessions with county departments, infrastructure and school briefings, a public hearing on the current fiscal year budget and several action items.

The board opened at 5 p.m. at the Craig County Courthouse before recessing into a budget work session with Commissioner of the Revenue Danielle Snider, Commonwealth’s Attorney Matt Dunn, Sheriff Trevor Craddock and EMS representative Darryl Humphreys. Supervisors later reconvened for the regular meeting, which began with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.

Consent items approved included minutes from the March 5 and March 19 meetings, along with routine claims and warrants.

During the briefing portion of the meeting, supervisors heard updates from Brian Blevins and Ashley Mothena of VDOT regarding the Six-Year Secondary System Improvement Program work session. Additional reports were presented by Trace Bellassai on behalf of the Broadband Information Technology Committee, Craig County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Wheeler, Woody Lipps regarding the Craig Valley Railbed Trail and Marge Lewter of Preserve Craig.

The board also considered an appointment to the Craig County Board of Zoning Appeals, with Chad Campbell nominated for the position.

In new business, supervisors took up a resolution related to the Gold Standard OAA Incentive Policy.

A public hearing was also held on an amendment to the fiscal year 2025-26 budget, followed by board consideration of a resolution to amend the budget.

Other agenda items included the treasurer’s report, reports and inquiries from board members, a public comment period and an additional budget work session with Craig County Public Schools and Wheeler.

The meeting concluded with a closed session for personnel matters, followed by a resolution certifying the closed meeting complied with the Code of Virginia.

At the close of the session, the board recessed to its April 15 public hearing on the budget and the Six-Year Secondary System Improvement Program, scheduled for 6 p.m. or as soon after as possible.

More detailed coverage of the discussions, presentations and actions from the April 2 meeting will appear in forthcoming issues.
