Craig Valley VFW Post 4491 has announced its 2025 award recipients, recognizing local students, educators and public safety personnel for their achievements and service.
Makenzie G. Lucas was named the post’s winner of the Voice of Democracy essay contest. This year’s theme was “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”
In her winning essay, titled “The Impact of Informed Voters,” Lucas emphasized civic engagement and the importance of informed participation in democracy.
“Patriotism is not limited to waving our flag or reciting the pledge of allegiance — it’s actively contributing to ensure America remains the greatest country on earth,” Lucas wrote. “I believe that, as Americans, one of the greatest acts of patriotism is to vote.”
Lucas highlighted the importance of staying informed on public issues, evaluating candidates thoughtfully and maintaining media literacy in an era of widespread misinformation.
“Being an informed voter is not only patriotic, it is responsible and crucial to fair lawmaking,” she wrote. “When we are informed rather than influenced, we are upholding the values of democracy that our nation was built on.”
She also noted the role of advocacy and volunteerism in strengthening communities and preparing young people for future civic responsibilities.
“Active citizenship doesn’t start at voting age, it starts now,” Lucas wrote.
In the Patriot’s Pen competition, Cecilia R. Diaz was recognized as the post-level winner. Her entry was submitted through VFW Post 5311.
Emily Nolen of Craig County High School was named Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year. She also earned top honors at the VFW District 6 level for high school teachers.
The post also recognized several local public safety professionals for their service:
Gregory E. May, deputy sheriff with the Craig County Sheriff’s Office, received the Law Enforcement Award.
Joshua W. Mitchell, dispatcher with the Craig County Sheriff’s Office, was honored for his service.
James Blankenship of the New Castle Volunteer Fire Department received the Firefighter Award.
Trace Bellassai of Craig County Rescue EMS was recognized as EMT of the Year.
VFW Post 4491 officials said the awards highlight the dedication and contributions of individuals who serve their community and exemplify the values of citizenship and patriotism.
