Thanks to Monday’s inclement weather the Craig County softball team will open the spring season at home. The Rockets will host Staunton River today, Wednesday, for a 5 pm game in New Castle.
The Rockets were scheduled to open Monday against Staunton River in Moneta but Monday storms moved that back to Thursday of this week. So, the Rockets will play the Golden Eagles on back-to-back days before taking off next week for spring break. The next game after this week will be Tuesday, March 31, at home against Narrows.
The Rockets are hoping to improve on last year’s 4-9 record. Nine of the 13 girls on last year’s team were underclassmen and Craig finished third in the Pioneer District and advanced to the Region 1C tournament. They welcome back senior Kammie Fisher, a strong pitcher who missed all of last season with an injury.
“We’re excited to have Kammie back in the circle after she missed last season with an injury,” said coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “She’s one of six seniors, so we’re also focused on developing our younger players and building for the future. Our goal is to be competitive every game and continue improving throughout the season.”
