Craig County Public Schools officials are investigating an incident that occurred during a boys basketball game Thursday night against Narrows High School, according to a letter sent to families by Superintendent Jason A. Wheeler.

In the letter dated Jan. 23, Wheeler said the division is aware of the incident and is treating the matter seriously, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for students, staff and spectators.

The division is currently gathering information from multiple sources, reviewing available documentation and speaking with individuals who were present, Wheeler said. The goal of the investigation is to fully understand what occurred and determine appropriate next steps in accordance with division policies, Virginia High School League expectations and applicable procedures.

Because the situation involves students and personnel, Wheeler said the school division must comply with privacy laws and cannot release specific details while the investigation is ongoing.

“Student safety, sportsmanship and accountability remain our top priorities,” Wheeler wrote.

Wheeler thanked the community for its patience and cooperation and said additional information will be shared when appropriate.
