The Craig County girls won two games last week to even their overall basketball record at 4-4, and this week they’re looking to get over .500.
The Rockets were scheduled to play at Glenvar on Monday but results were too late for publication. Craig beat the Highlanders in the season opener in New Castle and Glenvar was in the midst of a 51 game losing streak prior to Monday’s tilt in Roanoke County.
The Rocket girls are at Narrows tonight for what figures to be a tough game. The Green Wave beat Craig in New Castle and former Rocket Kailyn Jones is having a big year for Narrows.
This Saturday the girls are in Rocky Gap to play Bland County in a doubleheader with the boys. Bland is having a similar year to the Rockets, coming into the week at 6-5 overall. The girls will precede the boys with a 2 pm starting time.
The Rockets are red hot coming into the week. Last Tuesday at home they beat Bath, 56-41, as Emily Smith scored 23 points and Daileigh Donithan had 13. Kammie and Natalie Fisher had 11 rebounds each while Kallie Fisher had nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. All five starters scored for Craig.
“We had a rough week prior so we knew we needed a strong showing to bounce back,” said coach Erica Crabtree. “That’s exactly what the girls did. They stepped up when needed and it but us back to where we needed to be.”
On Friday Highland came to town for a Pioneer District game and the Rockets eased to a 62-21 win. Craig led 20-9 at the half, then outscored the Rams 42-12 after intermission.
“We moved the ball well and got everyone clean looks,” said Crabtree.
Smith had 30 in this one to go with seven assists and six steals. Donithan had 13 points, Natalie Fisher had eight points and 11 boards and Kallie Fisher stuffed the stat sheet with five points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals. Alivia Fowler came off the bench to score half a dozen.
“We definitely picked it up from the previous games and had the week we needed to put us back to even,” said Crabtree. “Now we just have to keep up the momentum and continue to play our game.”
