Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to a residential structure fire Sunday afternoon in the Catawba area.
At 3:50 p.m. Jan. 5, units were dispatched to the 6100 block of Newport Road for reports of a structure fire. First-arriving crews from Station 4 (Catawba) reported smoke and flames coming from a camper located in the backyard of the residence and marked the incident as a working fire at 3:55 p.m.
Firefighters knocked down the fire in approximately 15 minutes.
According to the Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire remains under investigation. Estimated damages are $10,000.
Five adults, one child and eight dogs were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. One adult was transported to the hospital for treatment of burns. One dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment of minor injuries.
Roanoke County Police assisted at the scene.
