Arlene Rhodes, Barbara VanDyke and Ellie Linkous were honored by the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council at the annual meeting held recently in Blacksburg.
Arlene Rhodes of Craig County was presented the Virginia Skyline Appreciation Award. This award, given to registered adult Girl Scouts, is for outstanding service to the entire council that is above and beyond the expectations of the position held.
Currently serving as an adventurer coordinator for older girls, she has been a troop leader, co-leader, troop consultant, annual meeting delegate and service unit cookie manager.
Rhodes initiated and planned the first Twilight Camp in Craig County and recently worked with the council-wide Older Girl Roundup. She has also helped establish a community park with play equipment that is maintained by the Girl Scout troops in her area.
Barbara Van Dyke from Radford was given the Honor Pin, an award presented to registered adult Girl Scouts whose service has benefited two or more service units and has been above and beyond the position they hold. She has served as troop leader of two different age levels (in two different service units) at the same time, as a service unit organizer and as a unit leader at day camp. Van Dyke, very active with the adventurer program, constantly promotes the use of the council’s facilities and encourages others to become involved in Girl Scouting.
Ellie Linkous from Blacksburg received the Council Plaque Award which is given for long time outstanding service to Girl Scouting. It may be presented to adult members of the movement, businesses, corporations, organizations or individuals who are not members of the Girl Scout organization. Currently employed by the council as a field specialist working directly with the volunteers and girls, she has served as a volunteer troop leader, day camp director and service unit cookie manager. Linkous is consistently described as a woman who sets an example of what Girl Scouting should be.
The Council Plaque Award was also presented to four organizations for their support throughout the years: South Roanoke United Methodist Church (37 years), Blacksburg United Methodist Church (16 years), Whitmell elementary School in Dry Fork (15 years) and First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg (10 years).
