The Craig County boys’ basketball team will be looking to pick up a few wins this week as the Rockets have three games in four days.

The week started off with back-to-back games against Faith Christian and Bath County. Craig was in Roanoke to play Faith on Monday and home to take on Bath on Tuesday, with results too late for press deadlines.

The Rockets are home again Thursday to host Highland County in a Pioneer District game. That will be a doubleheader with the girls, who open at 5:30 pm followed by the boys at approximately 7 pm.

The Rockets played three games last week and went 1-2. They hosted Giles on January 5 and dropped a 58-44 decision.

“Very competitive game,” said coach Jimmy Fisher. “Our bench isn’t super deep and the second quarter keeps getting us. We were outscored 15-7 in the second quarter. The final score was not indicative of the game.”

Craig trailed by just seven points with just under two minutes to go, and the Rockets were forced to foul. Bradyn Dunbar had 14 points and Luke Potter had 13.

A night later the Rockets bussed to Pocahontas County, West Virginia where they took a 65-53 win.

“A team that looks a lot like us,” said Fisher. “Athletic and scrappy. We finally started hitting some jump shots and free throws. Felt great to break the losing streak.”

Potter, Dunbar and Caleb Cregger each scored 16 points and Marcus Donithan added nine as the Rockets picked up their first win of the season.

Last Thursday in Buena Vista the Rockets ran into a buzz saw as Parry McCluer took a 71-22 win. Craig trailed 20-4 after the first quarter and were never in the game.

“Smothered early, they are really good,” said Fisher.

The loss dropped Craig to 1-6 on the season. Next week they have three home games, a Pioneer District game with Eastern Montgomery on Monday, a non-district game with the Boys Home on Tuesday and another district game with Narrows on January 22nd.
