The Craig County New Castle Volunteer Fire Department responded to multiple reports of fire Tuesday, Dec. 30, in the area of Big Mountain Road.

At 12:51 a.m., units were dispatched to the 1200 block of Big Mountain Road for a reported fire involving hay bales and equipment in a field. Unit 42 arrived with four firefighters and found a well-involved structure fire.

Fire officials said strong winds and frigid temperatures complicated firefighting efforts as the incident progressed, with freezing conditions causing issues for fire apparatus and worsening fire conditions. The fire was later determined to be remnants of a previous burn.

All units cleared the scene at 8:30 a.m.

Later that morning, at 7:28 a.m., units were again dispatched for a reported fire of unknown origin in the same general area. The caller reported visible fire and smoke but was unsure what was burning.

No injuries were reported.
