Reba Butterworth Vernon, 89, of New Castle, VA, passed away on December 19, 2025.
Reba was a proud graduate of William Byrd High School. She began her career as the librarian at Roland E. Cook School, later becoming the school secretary. After retiring, her devotion to education brought her back to serve as an administrative assistant for the Roanoke County School Board.
She married the love of her life, Bruce Vernon, and together they raised their son, Bruce “Timmy” Vernon.
Reba loved Jesus with all her heart and was a devoted member of New Castle United Methodist Church. She was a kind, gentle, and loving woman who devoted her life to her family, friends, and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Beulah Butterworth; her brother, Warren Butterworth; and her beloved husband, Bruce Vernon. She is survived by her son, Bruce “Timmy” Vernon, along with many nieces, nephews, “sisters” and special friends who became family to her.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the caregivers who have taken such good care of Timmy during Reba’s absence.
Funeral services were held on December 26, 2025, at Paitsel Funeral Home in New Castle, VA. Visitation began at 10:00 a.m., and was followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service took place at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Waiteville, WV. A dinner, graciously provided by New Castle United Methodist Church, will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Castle United Methodist Church.
Reba will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. While we rejoice knowing she is with Jesus and reunited with the family who went before her, we can truly say the world was a better place because she lived.
