Craig County’s Caleb Cregger(left)is a first team selection as a defensive back on the VHSL

It’s been a while since Craig County had a football player on the all-state team, much less two. That’s the case this year as junior Caleb Cregger was named to the Virginia High School League Class 1 first team at defensive back and senior Carter Calfee was named to the second team at punt return.

“To have two players recognized as all-state in the same year is a great honor for our program,” said Craig coach Jimmy Fisher. “Both are VHSL all state, which is the official all-state team.”

Both were key members of Craig’s school record setting 10-2 team this fall. Rocket coach Jimmy Fisher has been around the program for over 40 years and he’s somewhat the historian of the program. There haven’t been a lot of kids from Craig County earn all-state honors in football.

“To the victors go the spoils, so there hasn’t been much opportunity for our kids to make the all-state team in the past,” he said. “I know Casey Hancock made second team in 2005, and maybe 2004 as well. That was the VHSL team voted on by the coaches. There are other teams as well, or at least there used to be other all-state teams. I know Corey Tenney was second team tight end on either the sportswriters or the VHSCA all-state team. I think Robby Huffman and Chris Blankenship made one of those two teams as well. Doug Thompson was VHSL first team all-state kicker way back in 1984.”

Rappahannock senior dual-threat quarterback and defensive back C.J. Kelly is the Class 1 Offensive Player of the Year, and Essex senior linebacker Xzayviia Bundy is the Class 1 Defensive Player of the Year. Rappahannock head coach William West is the Class 1 Coach of the Year.
