The Craig County School Board unanimously approved a new student dress code policy on first reading during its Dec. 16 meeting.

The motion was made by Vice Chair Darren Gilreath of the Simmonsville District and seconded by Heather Matheney of the Craig Creek District.

The proposed policy, listed as CCPS-10, outlines minimum and additional requirements for student attire across Craig County Public Schools. According to the policy, the division aims to respect students’ right to self-expression while ensuring clothing is appropriate for a K-12 educational environment and supports health, safety and participation in learning.

Minimum requirements include clothing that covers the torso from armpit to armpit and extends approximately three to four inches down the upper thighs. Tops must have shoulder straps at least two finger widths wide, and shoes are required at all times. See-through garments must be worn with appropriate coverage, and undergarments must not be visible.

The policy would allow hats in common areas such as hallways and cafeterias, with classroom use left to teacher discretion. Hoods would be prohibited indoors. Specialized attire would be permitted for certain courses, including athletic uniforms or safety gear.

Additional provisions prohibit clothing or accessories that depict illegal activity, weapons, drugs, pornography, vulgar or discriminatory language, or gang affiliation. Sunglasses would not be allowed indoors, and items considered distracting or unsafe — including costumes, masks that obscure the face, or accessories that create noise or unusual movement — would be restricted.

Exceptions would be allowed for medical or religious reasons and during designated school-sponsored events such as spirit weeks or theme days, provided items remain school-appropriate and do not disrupt learning or safety.

Under the proposed policy, school administrators would have authority to determine appropriate dress. Students who do not comply could be removed from class, with parents contacted if suitable clothing is unavailable. Repeated or willful violations could result in disciplinary action under the student code of conduct.

The policy is expected to return to the board for a second reading and possible final approval at a future meeting.
