The Craig County boys and girls will both have basketball games this week as the Virginia High School League winter sports season officially opens.
The girls opened their season on Monday with a game at Glenvar. Results were too late for publication, but the girls play again Friday at Faith Christian. The girls’ roster includes seniors Jenna Boitnotte, Daileigh Donithan and sisters Kallie and Kammie Fisher, junior Annika Zimmerman, sophomores Nadia Arroyo and Natalie Fisher and freshmen Emily Smith and Alivia Fowler.
“Our goal this year is to play as a team and use everyone’s skill set to be able to compete with anyone we play,” said coach Erica Crabtree. “We have a good mix of returners and new additions that complement each other well so we hope to use that this season to be a tough team on both the defensive and offensive sides of the floor.”
The girls and boys both had games scheduled with Giles on Tuesday of this week but both have been postponed.
The boys will open Thursday at home against Roanoke Valley Christian, followed by a Friday game against Faith Christian, also in New Castle.
Jimmy Fisher is the new head coach of the boys’ basketball team. He did not have a roster finalized as of press time due to the football season running into basketball preseason practice time.
