March is Women’s History Month and notes the importance of women in Virginia. Especially in rural communities, Virginia is recognizing the diverse and often overlooked contributions of women throughout its history, with a particular focus on those who shaped rural life.

From the earliest colonial settlements to the present day, women in Virginia’s rural communities have played vital roles as farmers, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Their labor, resilience, and innovation have been essential to the state’s agricultural heritage and social fabric.

“Virginia’s history is rich with the stories of women who have defied expectations and made lasting impacts on their communities,” said representatives from the Library of Virginia. “Especially in rural areas, women’s contributions were often essential for the survival and prosperity of families and communities.”

Historically, rural women in Virginia faced numerous challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Yet, they persevered, finding ways to contribute to their families and communities.

From the earliest days of Virginia’s colonization, women were essential to the survival of the settlements. They were involved in farming, food preservation, and providing medical care. They worked in the fields, and maintained the family’s foundation. During the 19th and 20th centuries, many women in rural Virginia worked on farms, often alongside their husbands and families. They played crucial roles in planting, harvesting, and processing crops, passing essential skills for survival to future generations.

Today, women continue to be vital to Virginia’s rural communities. They are involved in agriculture, small business ownership, and community development. Many women are leading the way in sustainable agriculture, and local food movements. In Craig County, women are leading the community from the historical perspective with the care of the Old Hotel and the restoration of the Clifton Store. Diverse community efforts led by women in Craig County include the library, childcare services, homeschool program, health center, recreational opportunities for all ages and many others.

Throughout March, various events and exhibitions will be held across Virginia to celebrate Women’s History Month. These events will provide opportunities to learn more about the contributions of women to the state’s history and culture. By recognizing the achievements of women in rural Virginia, we honor their legacy and inspire future generations to continue their work.
