Woman becomes hunter
From the January 26, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join em” is the philosophy adopted by Pam Looney of New Castle, who grew tired of being left behind during hunting season and decided to join her husband Larry on this season’s bear hunting trips. It paid off for her in a big way Dec. 9 when she bagged her first bear.
Larry recently had surer for a herniated disc in his neck, but he refused to let that stop him from participating in the sport he loves so much. Pam originally planned to just go along for the ride, but soon found herself handling the dogs, running the ridges and doing whatever she was called on to do to make the hunt a success.
Hunting out of the Lone Oak Hunt Club of Alleghany County, the Looneys concentrated their effort on the Morning Knob area of Peters Mountain. Using well-trained bear dogs, two-way radios and four-wheel drive vehicles, the club enjoyed a good season killing a total of six bears.
Pam’s was among the biggest taken. She killed the 225-pound bear after the dogs treed it just below the fire tower on Peters Mountain. Pam shot it with a .30.30 rifle.
It took several hours and la lot of manpower to get the trophy out of the woods. Pam plans to have the bear mounted.
