The Craig County girls’ basketball team had a tough opening game last week as they took on Staunton River in Moneta. The Golden Eagles are a Class 3 team from the talented Blue Ridge District and Class 1 Craig was no match for the home team in a 68-4 loss.
“We struggled to find our rhythm, but even despite the rough start to the season the girls continued to fight and never gave up,” said first year head coach Erica Crabtree.
Morgan Underwood had two points for the Rockets and Brooklyn Cayton and Gracie Huffman scored one free throw each.
“We started to come alive in the fourth quarter with more scoring opportunities and more aggression,” said Crabtree. “We hope to carry this into our next game from tip off to finish.”
The Rockets were scheduled to host Staunton River in their home opener on Monday but results were too late for publication. The girls are back home in New Castle Thursday to take on Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy and on Friday they have another tough opponent when they travel to Christiansburg to play the Class 3 Blue Demons, one of the stronger teams in the tough River Ridge District.
