As I handle the Facebook account for the newspaper, I am following numerous groups. I tend to get caught up in neighborhood posts the most and if a post has a dog in it, I will certainly follow it. One of these neighborhood groups is about New Castle. As I was scrolling through Facebook around July 15th, I was following a post series about an abandoned dog. This poor brown mangy dog was spotted numerous times by the people of New Castle. Days of Facebook posts had him roaming up and down Rt. 311. He seemed afraid of people and looked tired and hungry. Concerned citizens set up a trap for him and using hot dogs he was eventually caught on July 20th by Craig County Animal Control and taken to Angels of Assisi for medical care. He did have a microchip and those records said his name is George. This social media star was in rough shape; tons of ticks, a severe skin infection that caused him to lose most of his hair, a split tooth, and he was very skinny. Even though he was not feeling great he gave nonstop kisses. They hoped to find his owner but they couldn’t. Once he was feeling better and neutered, he was put up for adoption. Within days, on September 24th, he was adopted into his forever home. “George and I are best friends. His hair is filling in nicely and he loves to snuggle. He is such a smart, loyal, and loving boy,” said his adopter.
Because the community saw something and said something, George was rescued. With the donations given by amazing donors to Angels of Assisi, animals like George can be helped in a timely manner and given a safe space to heal with a future to look forward to.
