From the November 2, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record
On Sept. 23-25 nearly 100 boys along with their leaders and district staff met at the Pines campground for the annual Catawba District Fall Camporee. The theme for the camporee was Basic Scout Skills. With Scoutmaster Vernon Allie and Webelos Den Leader Arnie Pavlik encouraging the twelve boys that participated from our troop, they came away with a blue ribbon for accumulating points through participation in activities and competitions.
Some of the classes they took included: knot tying, cooking without utensils, and a map and compass reading. As a camp project some of the boys created a flag pole by lashing some cut wood together while others made a table, and others created a tripod for the dishwashing bowl.
Saturday afternoon competitions challenged the young men to utilize a combination of the skills they learned to complete assigned tasks. Adult leader: Len Ricket, Steven Greenway, Steve Elmore, Alan Bostic, and Rob Stahl all provided encouragement and guidance which added to the Scout spirit and helped make the weekend a great success.
