Last fall the first scheduled home game for the Craig County football team was postponed because the field was in poor condition. That won’t be the case this year.
The Rockets are scheduled to open the season on Friday, August 30, at home against Bland County and the field is in the best shape ever. The new Bermuda grass surface has taken hold and the field is like a lush carpet.
“Last year coach (football assistant Jayke) Dowdy went to the school board and said we’re getting kids hurt because of our field, and other teams don’t like to play here,” said Craig football coach Jimmy Fisher. “I never said anything because I didn’t think they’d do anything, but they took his advice. Mr. Huff used to do fields like this.”
School Superintendent Dwayne Huff took on the project and with help from Shane Gills and the maintenance staff they set out to get rid of the old grass and put in a new Bermuda turf field. The result speaks for itself as now the field has a sprinkler system and a plush gridiron that Craig fans are going to be impressed with when they come out to Rocket games this year. The Mitchell Field surface is second to none as the Rockets prepare to open the season.
The first action on the new field will be this Friday when Craig plays host to Richwood High in a scrimmage.
