Craig County Public Schools kicked off the 2024-25 school year with a bang – or perhaps more accurately, a delayed start. After a storm postponed the initial opening day, students were eager to return to the classroom on Monday, Aug. 12.
“They were ready to come back,” said Craig County High School Principal Susan Stimeling. The school hallways quickly filled with the familiar hum of teenage life. A new chapter also began with Virginia’s statewide cell phone policy. While some anticipated chaos, Stimeling said the school was prepared. “We were ready,” she said. “Card games are available at lunch, and we’re seeing kids talking to each other.” The policy seems to have created a more engaged atmosphere, with students less distracted by their devices.
To ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed, Craig County has expanded its support services. The Student Success Center, located to the right of the school entrance, is stocked with essential school supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons. It’s like a one-stop shop for students to get their ‘job’ done.
Beyond academics, the school is also focused on students’ overall well-being. The Care Closet provides personal care items such as deodorant, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products. Students can discreetly pick up what they need. The closet also offers clothing in various sizes, though students should check in with the front office for assistance.
Thanks to the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, all Craig County students are eligible for free meals this year. “Students attending a participating school will be provided a nutritious meal for breakfast and lunch each day at no charge to the household,” said Sherry Crowder, director of school nutrition. For those who miss the early breakfast, a second chance option is available at 10 a.m. for a small fee.
As the school year progresses, the Craig County community can look forward to a host of engaging and rousing events. From school-wide projects focused on participating at Fall Festival to thrilling Friday night football games, there’s something for everyone. A palpable sense of excitement fills the air as students, faculty, and community members anticipate a fantastic year.
