Yvonne Hypes Lucas, a cherished matriarch and beacon of warmth in her community of Newport, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024, at the Lewis Gale Medical Center-Montgomery. Born on January 3, 1937, in Craig County Virginia, Yvonne’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith.
Yvonne’s journey began as the daughter of Craig and Tula Irene Hypes, where she grew up surrounded by the history and landscapes of Virginia. Her life was one of devotion, not only to her own family but to the many lives she touched with her kindness. She shared a beautiful and enduring love with her late husband, Howard Andrew Lucas, a bond that was a source of strength and inspiration for their children and all who knew them.
A beloved homemaker and caregiver, Yvonne dedicated her life to nurturing her family, creating a home filled with laughter, love, and the sweet aroma of her famous baked goods. Her sons, David, Roger (Pam), Timothy, Dean, and Kevin (Ruth). Her daughters Susan Lane (Randy), Esther Diane Schneider (Bill), all were the pride of her life, and she instilled in them the values of compassion, resilience, and integrity.
Yvonne’s legacy continued through her adoring grandchildren, Crystal (James), Becky (Julius), Tyler, Andrew, Amanda (Copeland), Brandon (Lexi), Miranda, Garrett, Logan, CJ and Alexa. Each of them carried a piece of her spirit and teachings into the world. Her great-grandchildren, Aaron, Skyler, Sonny, Zeyden, Honor, Remington, Colton, and Kayden, were the twinkling stars in her sky, bringing her immense joy and pride.
Her late siblings, Douglas, Sidney, Levi, Raymond, Varenia Ryan, Harvey, and Marie Hypes, held a special place in her heart, as did their memories. Yvonne’s familial bonds were a fortress of support and affection, a legacy that will continue to live on in the stories and memories shared by her loved ones.
Yvonne’s life was marked by her passionate involvement in her church, where she was not only a faithful member but a source of light and guidance for the congregation. Her interests were as diverse as they were heartfelt; from the thrill of bingo and building of friendships to the delicate care she poured into her flower gardens. Her hands were skilled in the art of quilting, each stitch a representation of her meticulous care and attention to detail. Music filled Yvonne’s home and heart. The melodies and harmonies were reflections of her own harmonious approach to life, always seeking to soothe, uplift, and bring people together.
Yvonne’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of dedication, joy, and unwavering faith. She was a woman of strength and grace, facing life’s challenges with a steadfast heart and an unshakeable spirit. Her presence was a comfort, her advice a treasure, and her love a never-ending wellspring.
