On March 19, 2024, the Craig County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee and the county FFA students celebrated Agricultural Literacy Week by reading the book “Logan’s Greenhouse” by JaNay Brown-Wood to PreK – 3rd grade students at McCleary Elementary School. Students enjoyed a cup of “dirt” pudding as they listened to Women’s Committee members read them the story of a young boy’s vibrant exploration of gardening and healthy eating. The students then worked with the FFA members to decorate a bag to make their own greenhouses so they can watch the germination process of their seeds by hanging them in the windows near the cafeteria and learn about the parts of a plant. Grades 4 and 5 participated in the greenhouse craft and parts of a plant lessons as well.
The CCFBWC donated a “Logan’s Greenhouse” book to each classroom in Prek-3, the school library, the day care center, the county library and the Kindling School for homeschoolers.
March 18-22 was Agricultural Literacy Week.
“The Craig County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee is excited to partner with Agriculture in the Classroom to celebrate the 14th annual Agriculture Literacy Week, March 18-22, 2024,” organizers said ahead of time. “During this week, volunteers from across the state will be participating by serving as guest readers in preschool through third grade classrooms where they will read Agriculture in the Classroom’s 2024 Book of the Year, “Logan’s Greenhouse” by JaNay Brown-Wood. This week is routinely recognized by special proclamation from the governor and offers students a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about farming and the source of their food. Additionally, the event connects teachers and schools to resources in their community. Past readers have included the First Lady of Virginia, Virginia’s Secretary of Agriculture and many more dedicated members of the agriculture community. This “greenhouse to table” book takes place in young Logan’s greenhouse as he explores various fruits and vegetables. To complement the book, Agriculture in the Classroom has developed enrichment activities to further students’ learning. These, as well as a comprehensive lesson plan library, can be found on the Agriculture in the Classroom website, Virginia.Agclassroom.org.”
