For some kids, summer went by way too fast. For others, it seemed to creep by like a snail this year due to the ongoing effects of the coronavirus.
Regardless, school is upon us and students, families, teachers and administration are kicking it in high gear to make sure all is lined up for the best year ever at Craig County Public Schools.
Superintendent Jeanette Warwick shared her motto for this 2020-2021 year will be “We will be CCPS STRONG.”
Various supplies for students are always needed as the teachers do so many different activities with their students, plus basic supplies are necessary.
This year, on August 7, CCPS said, “Unfortunately this year our school division was not included in the Load the Bus school supply event at Walmart Salem. I know how many Craig County residents donated supplies through this program.”
However, the Salvation Army, who is in charge of collecting and distributing school supplies collected at the various Load the Bus events, has agreed to allow Craig County families to sign up for school supplies.
The Salvation Army has developed packets for age groups, but parents must provide their child’s age and grade. Parents must also bring the following in order to qualify:
- An ID card for the adult picking up the supplies
- A birth certificate for each child requesting a supply packet; (Note: the school does not maintain copies of birth certificates so we cannot provide parents)
- Proof of enrollment – (Note: the letters you received regarding class assignments [McCleary] and schedules [CCMS/CCHS] would meet this requirement)
“My understanding is that the packets are all the same for each age group, so you cannot choose individual items,” Principal Gerri VanDyke said.
People can call the Salvation Army beginning on August 18 to set up an appointment. Ask for Jamie Goodman at (540) 343-5335, Extension 121.
Also, if anyone would like to donate supplies to the schools for the students, one can drop them off at either school. Food Country has kindly placed a buggy in the front of their store, for anyone who wishes to donate or drop off their items.
Each class has a “wish list” of items the teacher would like to have for their students. These can be donated to the schools. If you would like to donate to a particular class, please designate your donation when you bring it in.
“Purchasing supplies will be optional for the 2020-2021 school year,” VanDyke said. “However, if you would like to purchase your child’s own set of supplies, please see the lists below.”
