Gwendolyn K. Johnson “Gwen,” 79 of New Castle, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 11.
Gwen was born in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from John Marshall High School and attended Mary Baldwin College for one year. She had some nursing school at Grace Hospital in Richmond.
She married and had three children, drove a school bus, did medical transcription and worked for numerous doctors at the Medical College of Virginia where she retired after many years.
She then moved to New Castle to be closer to her grandkids and made many precious memories with them. Gwen managed the New Castle Commons for 11 years. She had a passion for writing and photography, and used it in her stories for the New Castle Record.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Marie Kelley, Jr. She is survived by loving husband, Inman Johnson; son, David Johnson and Susan Blair; daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy Surface and Mark, Christy Dean and Ted; grandchildren Matthew and Elizabeth Surface; brother and sister-in-law Thomas F. Kelley III and Carol; sister Marsha Smith; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Lorraine Taylor, were held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, at Grace Assembly of God. The family received friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service. Interment followed at Huffman Memorial Park. Arrangements by Paitsel Funeral Home. www.paitselfh.com
