The first year Craig County High School soccer team is improving with each game and looking to pick up a win before the end of the season. Craig scored twice in a home game with Auburn last week but dropped a 9-2 decision to the more-experienced Eagles.
Noah Reynolds gave the Rockets their first lead of the season when he scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the game. That lead was short-lived, but Tori Blevins added a second half goal and the Rockets looked much improved.
“We’re getting better every game,” said coach Robin Nobles. “We got a great defensive effort from Josh Menezes, Clayton Owens and sweeper Tanner Duncan. The defense doesn’t get as much attention but it’s an important part of the game, and they sacrificed a chance to score goals for the good of the team.”
Nobles also credited Sierra Klotter with some good passing and Matthew Charles for a solid defensive game.
Craig also played at Bath last week and was shut out by an aggressive Charger team, 9-0.
“They had one player who was just phenomenal and they kept the pressure on us all game,” said Nobles.
This week the Rockets were scheduled to play Parry McCluer on the artificial turf of Southern Virginia’s collegiate pitch on Tuesday. The Rockets will play Pocahontas on the road today, followed by a trip to Narrows next Wednesday, May 16. Then, a day later on May 17, they’ll play Narrows here.
