The opening of the spring sports season has been an exercise in frustration for the Craig County High School sports teams thus far. Through Tuesday the Rockets have not been able to play a single baseball or softball game, and only one soccer game, due to the unseasonably cold weather.
The Rockets hope that changes Wednesday, when they have their last scheduled events prior to next week’s spring break. The Rockets have a track meet at Eastern Montgomery and both baseball and softball makeup games at Auburn.
Craig’s only action thus far has been a soccer game against Covington last Monday, March 19. It was the first varsity game ever for the Craig County team and the Rockets lost to the Cougars, 8-0.
“Being the first game the kids were all pretty nervous,” said coach Robin Nobles. “And they were used to playing in the stadium, that was something new to them. But they all tried very hard and gave 100 percent.”
The Rockets had home baseball games with Auburn and Bath postponed last week. The Bath game will be made up, in Bath, as a doubleheader on May 1 but there is no makeup date yet for the Auburn home game. Craig had been rained out of a game at Auburn the week prior, and that’s the one they’re hoping to make up today.
The softball team was rained out of a home game with Bath that will also be made up as a doubleheader, at Bath, on May 1. Last Saturday the “Botetourt Bash” was snowed out at the Botetourt Sports Complex and that kept the Rockets from playing two more games.
The soccer team had two games postponed in addition to the one they were able to play. Last Friday’s home game with Bath has been rescheduled for April 20 and there was no makeup date as of press time for another weathered out game at Covington.
After today, the next action for Rocket sports will be baseball and softball at Covington on April 9 as the school teams take their spring break.
