Weather-permitting, the Craig County baseball team was scheduled to open this week with a game at Auburn. The Rockets’ home open is next Monday, March 19, also against Auburn.
Coach Brady Price has most of last year’s team returning, including seniors Jesse Brizendine and Ryan Lucas. Jakob Jones is a senior transfer.
“We have most everyone returning from last year plus a few new additions,” said Price. “We have a young but promising pitching staff this year that we hope will pick up where we left off last year and continue to make progress.”
Craig has four juniors on the roster, Brandon Swingle, Dalton McPherson, Devin Hutchison and Jake Robertson. Sophomores are Hunter Jones, Dakota Henderson, Christian Fisher, Hunter Brizendine, Jaylen Wolfe and Andrew Wolfe.
“We’re still working on who will play where,” said Price. “We have a lot of multi-talented young men who can play several positions on the diamond, which is always very useful.”
Craig did well in preseason scrimmages and Price hopes that carries over into the regular season. The Rockets will not have a jayvee team this year, as there weren’t enough boys to field a team at that level.
