The Craig County girls picked up their first volleyball win of the season last week when they defeated Alleghany in New Castle. Craig won in four sets.
The Rockets got off to a good start in the first set with a 25-21 win. When the two played in Alleghany the Craig girls let a first set lead get away, and ended up losing the match.
“It was just like the last time, only this time we kept our foot on the gas,” said Craig coach Geoff Boyer.
The Mountaineers tied the match by winning the second set, 25-18, but Craig came on strong to win the next two, 25-23 and 25-20 to put it away.
“It was a good night for everybody,” said Boyer. “We played well.”
Taylor Sloss led the team with 15 assists and two aces. Nicole Austin had four kills and five aces, Jaci McAlwee had five kills and Autumn Hutchison had four kills and five blocks.
The Rockets will now have 11 straight matches outside of New Castle, including five on Saturday. Craig was at Covington Tuesday and Thursday they go to Bath County. Then they play five at Auburn High this Saturday in a big event, beginning at 9 am against the host team. Craig will play Chilhowie at 11:30 am, Northwood at 12:45 pm, George Wythe at 3:15 pm and Patrick Henry of Glade Spring at 4:30 pm. Each match will be best-of-three to 25.
The Rockets are back on the road next week for a match at Christiansburg on Monday, and then they have the rest of the week off before returning to action September 26 at Eastern Montgomery.
