The Craig County volleyball team played their first road match of the season last week and lost at Alleghany. The host Mountaineers took a four set win in Low Moor, 25-20, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-10.
“Alleghany was very scrappy,” said Craig coach Geoff Boyer. “Both teams played well defensively. There were lots of long rallies.”
The Rockets got off to a good start, leading 17-12 in the first game. However, at that point Alleghany went on a 10-0 run and went on to win the game.
“We needed to win that game,” said Boyer. “We were playing well, then Alleghany went on that run. I used both of my timeouts during that stretch.”
The second game was tied at 13-13 when Alleghany scored six straight. The Rockets battled back to win the third set, but the Rockets went down 13-2 early in the fourth and Alleghany finished out the match.
Jaci McAlwee led the Rockets in kills with five and she also had a block. Taylor Sloss had nine assists and a block and Autumn Hutchison had three blocks, two kills and an ace.
“I thought it was a step in the right direction,” said Boyer. “We played as a team.”
The Rockets were scheduled to host Alleghany in a rematch on Tuesday of this week. Then they’re off for another week before traveling to Covington on September 12.
