And, as you know, the return of football means the return of our weekly football contest. We’ve had a contest here at the Salem Times-Register since before I arrived for the 1974 season, so it’s somewhat of a tradition. And you know how Salem people love tradition.
This year’s prizes are listed on the contest entry page found in this section. Thanks again to all the nice folks who sponsor the contest, with a special shout out to our main sponsor, Mac & Bob’s, who generously donate a $50 gift certificate to the winner each and every week of the season. They’ve been doing this for many years.
This year’s prizes add up to over $100 worth of booty for our weekly winner. The rules are easy, and again they can be found on the facing page. Please be sure to get your entry in on time. It must be in our office at 1633 West Main Street in Salem by 5 pm Friday. Or, if you mail it, it must be postmarked by that same time before heading to Greensboro.
This week 13 of the 15 games are high school games, as the pros won’t begin for a couple weeks and there’s just a very light college schedule. But that’s okay, because the high school teams change a good deal from year to year with graduation such, so they’re pretty hard to call early in the season. We don’t know yet if Salem will have a good team(wink, wink).
Also, remember we have a “One for the Road” question each week, with the winner receiving a United States Atlas from Hettie Barnes at State Farm Insurance. For this week’s question, give me a prediction on the score for Salem’s opening game at Amherst County Friday night. There’s a space on the entry blank to put your answer.
Finally, take a moment of silence for Roger Clark, a long time contestant who passed away about a month ago. We’re really going to miss Roger.
Good luck, and hope to hear from you all season long. –Brian Hoffman
