The Spartans clinched a spot in the state Final Four Tuesday with a 13-8 win over Western Albemarle in the 4A South Region semifinal game at Spartan Field. Salem will play a home game Friday night at Spartan Field against Monticello for the South Regional championship. Both teams are already in the state semifinal but the region winner gets a home game on June 7.
The state championship is scheduled for 10 am in Salem on June 10. So, if the Spartans continue to win they’ll never have to leave.
“That would definitely be to our advantage, so we really want to win this game Friday,” said Salem coach Maggi Pace.
On Tuesday at home the girls got four goals from Kara Yates in the win over Western Albemarle. Lilly Blair had three goals and six draw controls for the Spartans. Maddie Bowman, the recently named Conference Player of the Year, had 19 saves for Salem.
The girls are now 15-3. Last week they won a region quarterfinal game over E.C. Glass in Salem, 19-7. Blair had five goals, Abbey Greer had four goals and three assists and Libby Bowman had three goals and an assists.
