The Craig County baseball team ended the regular season with a home game against Auburn last Friday, and they were scheduled to begin post-season play with a game against the Eagles Monday, this time at Auburn.
The Conference 45 tournament was slated to begin Monday at the sites of the top four seeds. Craig was at Auburn, Narrows was at Bath County, Covington was at Radford and Eastern Montgomery was at Parry McCluer. Semifinals are scheduled for today with the championship game on Thursday.
Craig County finished the regular season with a 9-2 loss to Auburn in Craig last Friday, but the game was closer than the score indicates. Craig trailed just 2-1 after four innings and was hanging tough with senior Chad Ryan on the mound for “Senior Day.” Chad pitched into the seventh before Christian Fisher came on to get the last two outs.
Fisher also had two hits for the Rockets. Dakota Henderson drove in a run and Devin Hutchison had a solid day at the plate. Craig gunned down two runners at the plate in the game.
“We had eight hits but we left eight or nine on base,” said coach Brady Price. “We couldn’t get the clutch hit when we needed it, but overall I thought we played pretty well.”
The loss dropped the Rockets to 2-11 on the season. Henderson was scheduled to pitch Monday’s game in Riner. The Rockets would need to win their first two games to earn a spot in the Region 1A West tournament.
