The Craig County softball team is hoping to get over the .500 mark this week as they play three games. The Rockets will play Covington at home and Radford and Parry McCluer on the road.
Craig comes into the week at 6-7 after beating Eastern Montgomery by the slaughter rule in Elliston last week. Olivia Garman struck out nine in just five innings against the Mustangs while allowing only three hits.
Offensively, Craig had two homers of a different kind. Tierrney Zysk blasted her third home run of the season over the fence as she was three-for-three on the day with three runs batted in.
While Zysk’s swat was the traditional kind, Hannah Lipes also had a home run as she raced around the bases for an inside-the-park homer. The Mustangs were playing Hannah, a righthanded hitter, to pull and she surprised them by sending the ball down the rightfield line.
She was rounding third by the time the ball got back to the infield and scored with her first homer of the season. Hannah had two hits and three runs batted in and Kaylee Pauley had two hits and two runs batted in.
The Rockets were also scheduled to play Parry McCluer on Friday but that game was postponed due to a wet field. It will be made up this Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, and the Rockets are at Radford Friday.
