The Craig County baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Eastern Montgomery on the Elliston diamond last week. The host Mustangs scored twice in the bottom of the eighth after Craig had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning.
Craig led this one 3-0 after two and a half innings, but East Mont scored twice in the bottom of the third and tied it up with a single run in the fifth. Dakota Henderson pitched three solid innings before he was removed to save some pitching for a Friday game that, as luck would have it, wouldn’t even be played due to rain. Henderson struck out six of a possible nine outs and left with the lead.
Jake Robertson came on to pitch the fourth and also did well, allowing just three more runs over his five inning stint while fanning five. He stood to get the win when the Rockets broke the 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the eighth. Henderson’s two-out double brought Christian Fisher in with a run and Craig led 4-3 at that point. However, in the bottom of the eighth a double and a hit batter set the table for East Mont and a walk off double brought home both and sent the Rockets home disappointed with a 5-4 loss.
A doubleheader had been planned for that day but the second game was called after two innings and will not be made up. The loss dropped Craig to 2-8 and the Rockets will make up last Friday’s rained out game with Parry McCluer this Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista.
Craig also was scheduled to play two home games this week. Covington was due in Monday and the Rockets will host Auburn on Thursday.
