On Tuesday, April 18, Lowell Edwin Eakin, after a long struggle with cancer, was given peace and rest at his release into the everlasting presence of Christ our Lord. He had comfort and support from family as his hour drew near and the love of his life at his bedside upon his passing.
Lowell will be remembered by many for his big smile, his quick wit, his love of sports and his hard work and diligence. He loved his family, his little dogs, the outdoors, the woods, the mountains, the Outer Banks and the ocean blue. One of his long-held dreams was sailing through the islands of the Americas, snorkeling and catching dinner from the boat.
Lowell received numerous honors in athletics in track and field and football at his high school alma mater, Lord Botetourt. While attending Fork Union Military Academy playing football, he received scholarships from the University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech. He would go on to win an ACC Championship for the University of North Carolina. Most recently, Lowell was a certified real estate appraiser in association with the Wampler-Eanes Appraisal Group of Botetourt County, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife Lesle Eakin; his son Josh and wife Maria, and grandson Declan; his son Ben; his mother Malen; his brother Lenden, wife Kimberly, niece Mariah, and nephew Nathan; his sister Kelley; his brother Sam, wife Diane, and niece Grace; mother and father in-law Shirley and Don; sister and brother in-law Lisa and Dan; niece Linsey, husband John, and their son Dale; along with many cousins and other family. He was preceded in death by his father Grover Ralph Eakin.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Monday April 24 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens on Airport Road in Roanoke. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
