Sparky’s Run Dog Park will be closed beginning Monday until May 22 for repairs.
Improvements include a concrete pad at the entrance, dirt brought in to fill in the holes and reseeding of the entire park.
Ken Goodyear said the improvements are pretty simple and will cost less than $1,000. Public Works and members of the Beautification Committee are doing the work.
“It is one of those projects that you evaluate and then schedule. It was recommended from the head groundskeeper at RU that we pour a concrete pad at the entrance gate and to use Kentucky 31 grass,” he said. “We will also be planting several dogwood and maple tress. David Horton from the Beautification Committee would like to plant the trees on Friday, April 28, which is Arbor Day.”
It was the site of the old Police Department firing range before being converted into a dog park two years ago. Goodyear said the renovation was fairly simple since the water supply and shelter was already there.
He said that the filling of holes and reseeding is necessary because of the high use the park has received since its inception.
“When I went down to the park last week at 2 p.m. there were 20 pet owners and pets using the park,” Goodyear said. “Evenings are even busier. It is a great social gathering place.”
