Floyd is normally a state contender, but this year the Buffaloes are just 7-6 after a baker’s dozen games. However, Glenvar coach Teddy Moberg wasn’t going to let the record fool him.
“They’re aggressive as always and they have the talent to beat you on any night,” said Moberg. “They’re not as deep at the top, but they’re still good.”
Floyd comes into the week at 3-0 in the Three Rivers with Glenvar and Giles at 2-1. Glenvar’s district loss came at Giles last Friday, 67-54. While the final margin was 13, this was a one-point game with three minutes to go.
Giles led by just a point at the half, 24-23, then Glenvar girls started fouling out.
The Highlanders had four starters and a reserve foul out, and the only starter that didn’t foul out was Taylor Dishon, who played limited minutes because she was feeling somewhat ill. Abby Cairns had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Glenvar and Kyleigh Drew had 11 points.
Last Wednesday Cairns had 15 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals as Glenvar won at Auburn, 58-36.
Glenvar came into the week at 7-6 overall. Next Monday, January 23, the Highlanders have a tough non-district game against Parry McCluer, followed by a trip to winless James River on Tuesday.
