Morgan is a Salem native and was the all-time leading scorer at Andrew Lewis High School when Salem High opened and Lewis became a junior high school in 1977 . He led Salem to state championships as a coach in 1994 and 1999 before moving on to coach at Dobyns-Bennett.
Last week’s 500th win came against Tennessee High of Bristol. This year’s team is an uncharacteristic 5-1 with a young squad that includes six sophomores and a couple freshman. Dobyns-Bennett always plays a challenging schedule and this year the team had three games at the Disney World Complex in Orlando, Florida.
Morgan makes quite a few visits back to his home town and keeps in touch with many former players and fans. His brother Richard, who played at Salem High and the University of Virginia, is currently the head coach at Bluefield College.
