Radford, East Rockingham, R.E. Lee-Staunton, Blacksburg, Grafton, Deep Runand Langley Lead Wells Fargo Cup Athletic Standings after fall championships
Radford, East Rockingham, R.E. Lee-Staunton, Blacksburg, Grafton, Deep Run and Langley climbed to the top of the Group standings following the 2016-17 fall sports season.
Radford is looking for a third Cup in four years, while East Rockingham and R.E. Lee-Staunton sit atop the 2A standings. Blacksburg (3A), after amassing 245 fall points with state titles in boys/girls cross country, golf and football is looking for a 12th Cup title and 7thsince 2009, while Grafton (4A), Deep Run (5A) and Langley (6A) are all aiming for a first Cup.
Salem High School stands 15th in the Group 4A standings. The Spartans earned 50 points for a state football championship.
Glenvar is 22nd in Group 2A. The Highlanders earned 22.5 points in cheerleading.
First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports – the state champions’ state champion. Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the League’s enrollment groups.
The winner of the Wells Fargo Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports in the following manner: First place-50; Second place-45; Third place-40; Fourth place-35; Fifth place-30; Sixth place-25; Seventh place-20 and Eighth place-15. In the event of a tie, the schools received an equal number of points based on the number of schools that tie and the number schools that finish higher in the standings. For example, semifinal losers split third and fourth place points (37.5 points each).
Also, schools earning the League’s Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award earn 50 points each.
