The high school sports schedule is light this week as Salem and Glenvar teams recharge their batteries for the holidays. However, there are some games in town if you’re looking for entertainment.
The Salem Civic Center will play host to the annual K-Guard Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament, featuring eight strong boys’ teams. First round games are Wednesday with the championship round set for Friday. There will be games every day at the Salem Civic Center.
This year’s field includes William Fleming, Magna Vista, Hidden Valley, Alleghany, Lord Botetourt, Broadway, Cave Spring and Jefferson Forest. Games each day are at 3 pm, 4:30 pm, 6 pm and 7:30 pm with winners’ bracket games in the evening.
The Glenvar wrestling team will be in Buchanan on Friday to participate in the James River Duals at James River High School. As of the first of the week James River coach Tim Jennings had nine schools entered and was hoping to find a 10th. Those committed included Glenvar, Covington, Floyd, Madison, Parry McCluer, Radford, Riverheads, Roanoke Catholic and host River. The tournament will begin at 9:30 am on Friday.
The Glenvar girls’ basketball team will also play this week. The Highlanders will be at Parry McCluer on Friday for their final game of 2016.
Everyone is off this weekend and on Monday of next week, as the 2017 high school sports calendar begins on Tuesday, January 3. Locally, the Salem boys are at Carroll County in basketball and the Carroll girls come here. Glenvar’s boys will host Radford on Tuesday of next week.
On Wednesday, January 4, Salem will have a rare home wrestling match as Northside comes to town. The match will feature the Andrew Lewis Middle School wrestlers in a match against Northside Middle at 5 pm, followed by the high school varsity match.
The Glenvar’s girls basketball team is at Radford next Wednesday, and a week from today, on January 5, the Glenvar boys are at James River. Also on Thursday of next week the Salem boys basketball team hosts Blacksburg, the girls are at Blacksburg, while the Salem swimmers return to the pool with a meet against William Byrd and Lord Botetourt at the Salem YMCA.
