As many graduating seniors from Craig County High School drove out of the infamous ‘parking lot’ and onto the highway of dreams and visions, several had been rewarded with scholarships for their effort, love for their county and excellent grades.
- Adams Construction – Jason Wheeler – $3,000 to Olivia Menezes.
- Bobby Scruggs Foundation – Dr. Jackie Scruggs Taylor to Halie Wolfe and Emily Craddock.
- Craig Co. Bicentennial Commission – Jason Wheeler to Shaleigh Mayo.
- Craig Co. Education Association – Donna Deplazes to Halie Wolfe.
- “We believe that Education is a passport for your future,” she shared.
- Craig Co. Farm Bureau – Kelly Robinson to Shaleigh Mayo.
- Craig Co. Farm Bureau Women’s Committee – Kelly Robinson to Halie Wolfe.
- Craig Co. Retired Teachers – Jason Wheeler to Olivia Menezes and Emily Craddock.
- Dr. Walton F. Mitchell – Ryan Frazier to Savannah Looney.
- Farmers & Merchants Bank – Jason Wheeler $1,000 to Olivia Menezes and $500 each to Seth Helm
- and Hannah Lipes.
- John F. Cox Memorial Scholarship – Wanda Looney to Aubrey Ford.
- Monroe Co./Craig Co. Health Center – Linda Johnston to Savannah Looney, Morgan Caldwell, Maddy Jones, Austin Joyce, Chad Ryan and Halie Wolfe.
- Johnston said to the students, “Don’t wait for a special day to celebrate! Treat every day special, and remember the best is yet to come!”
- Ruth Hale Reynolds Scholarship (Maywood Garden Club) – Allison Vass to Savannah Looney
- Shelor Motor Mile – Jade Campbell $1,000 to Savannah Looney
- Steel Dynamics – Jason Wheeler to Courtney Ashley (she will receive $3000 each year for four years)
- The Foundation of Roanoke Valley – Jason Wheeler to Morgan Caldwell
- Tia Gardner Memorial Scholarship – Melissa Whiting and Lori Gardner to Trevor Smith
- Virginia Bear Hunter’s Association – $1,000 to Savannah Looney
Also, Maddy Jones happily received a ‘Perfect Attendance’ Award from Principal Robert Stump, with hoots and hand claps from her peers and those in attendance.
The top five graduating seniors who had a GPA of 3.5 or better were; Olivia Menezes, Seth Helm.
Hannah Lipes, Morgan Caldwell and Savannah Looney. “We are very proud of these students from Craig County as they worked diligently this year,” Stump said.
Several representatives of the scholarships were there to present them personally. As each went forward, classmates cheered them on with congratulations. Teacher Jason Wheeler shared, “I have watched you grow up from elementary kids bouncing off the walls!” The students joined him in laughter.
