The Pioneer District basketball tournament is scheduled for this week as Rocket teams try to earn a spot in the Region 1C tournament, which is scheduled for next week.
The Pioneer Tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday. The boys opened with a game at Eastern Montgomery and the girls were at Bath. Scores were too late for publication but the next round was scheduled for Tuesday.
The boys came into the week at 4-13 overall after dropping the last three games of the regular season last week. The Rockets fell at Bath County, 61-38, at home to Parry McCluer, 83-29, and at Eastern Montgomery, 65-34.
“We struggled offensively,” said coach Jim Fisher. “We hadn’t practiced since January 21st because of the weather. We had to go straight to games.”
The girls also lost their last three games last week to the same opponents. The girls opened the week with a 49-44 loss at Bath. Emily Smith led the Rockets with 17 points, Daileigh Donithan had 12 and Annalese Zimmerman had 11. Smith and Zimmerman had six rebounds each and Kallie Fisher dished out five assists.
The girls played at Parry McCluer on Tuesday and lost 54-42 despite 24 points and seven rebounds by Smith. Zimmerman had 11 points and 11 boards and Natalie Fisher pulled down 10 rebounds.
Last Wednesday at East Mont Smith had 21 points and three assists in a 46-39 loss to the Mustangs. Zimmerman had 10 points and six boards.
The girls finished the regular season with a 6-8 overall record.
